In the projects of Watts, Meryland Gonzalez, a twelve-year-old female boxer, trains to be crowned the 2019 Junior Olympics champion. Meanwhile, her immigrant parents work tirelessly to give their miracle child a shot at achieving her dreams.

After serendipitously meeting the subjects on the street, Gabriel spent a year-and-a-half outside the classroom, documenting the journey of this family.

Team Meryland is acquired by PBS’s POV Shorts and The New Yorker. It was a contender in the 94th Academy Awards for Best Short Documentary.
